  1. I have been thinking about bad fiction as I pour over an old Mickey Spillane novel. I know we need criteria and that people want benchmarks against which to judge works of fiction, but I think we sometimes go too far. I'm not suggesting we accept Stephanie Meyers into the fold, but we might want to look at what she is offering that is touching something in readers. And if so many readers find value, then perhaps that should be enough. Is it better to be loved by a few and disappear in a couple years, or to be loved by many and disappear a few years after that.
